John
CALLAGHAN

1988-1990

Where are living now?
We live in a village outside of Ramstein Air Base in Germany

What are you doing now?
I work for the Air Force. I am a civilian analyst at the Headquarters, United States Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces in Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA). I served in the Air Force for 10 years after graduating from the United States Air Force Academy in 1995. I left the Air Force, earned a Doctorate in International Relations from University of Cincinnati in 2010... and then went back to work as a civilian analyst for the Department of Defense - first the Marine Corps, and then the Air Force.

Married? Children?
Married in 2010 to my wife Jackie and we have two children - Jack (11) and Sadie (10)

Did you play collegiately?
No, I played baseball rather than football at the Air Force Academy

What is the fondest memory from your playing career at DeSales?
My fondest memory is the run we made our senior season - beating Watterson for the first time in my career... and then our run to State Finals... beating Steubenville to get there. I just regret that things didn't go our way in the Finals. But that first trip to the Finals was the beginning of Coach Jacoby's fantastic success at DeSales!

What made playing for DeSales so special?
The tradition. You believed you played at a special place with a tradition to uphold. You wanted to be a part of a long history of DeSales greatness.

What was your best game?
I can't pin down any best game. I just believed that as a middle linebacker at DeSales you were supposed to make every tackle and I tried to do so every game... following in the footsteps of other DeSales greats like my brother Phil... Johnny Dennis... the Stallion legends I had grown up watching.

What was it like playing for Coach Jacoby?
Coach Jacoby is a legendary coach. He works so hard. He loves his players. As I said, I am grateful that our team established that Coach Jacoby's teams were going to be a regular fixture in the State Finals. I am very grateful to have played for Coach.

Do you still follow DeSales, if yes, how closely?
My brother keeps me updated. I'm still always interested if we beat Watterson - the hatred you have for your rival never leaves you.

Callaghan (middle row, second from the left) was named First Team All-Metro by the Columbus Dispatch along with teammates Adam Asbeck and Luke Fickell
