Appearing in their third straight State Final, DeSales beat Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit 21-14 to repeat as Division-III State Champions.
 

1997 Division-III State Champions

DeSales kicker Brent Peterson's 28-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining lifted the Stallions to the 1997 Division-III State Championship over Youngstown Chaney 17-14.  Senior quarterback Matt Bajorek, one of 34 returning letter-winners from the 1996 State Runner-up team, accounted for 218 yards of offense to lead the Purple and White.

Making the program's first OHSAA playoff appearance, DeSales became Ohio's first-ever 14-0 team after their 21-13 win over Orrville in the 1985 Division-III State Championship.
