SFD Alumni Bowl Report
Five SFD Football alums are participating in College Football Bowl Games, starting yesterday (12/30) with Rodas Johnson ‘19, a defensive lineman for Wisconsin, in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and continuing last evening when Brian Asamoah ‘18 and the Oklahoma Sooners took on Florida in the Cotton Bowl.

Game notes: The 6-1, 230 pound redshirt sophomore recorded a career-high six solo tackles and also hauled-in his first interception for the Sooners, to go along with a pass break-up in his team’s victory.
For the season, the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honoree led the Sooners with 65 tackles.

He has led the Bearcats to back-to-back 11-win seasons entering 2020, the 2019 American Athletic Conference East Division Championship along with consecutive bowl-game wins in the 2018 Military Bowl and 2019 TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl.

Game notes: DiMaccio had four kickoffs for the Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl.
DiMaccio Season notes: DiMaccio, a junior kicker, appeared in six games primarily as a kickoff specialist. He led the team with 37 kickoffs and recorded five touchbacks.
Against Penn State, the former Stallion recorded his first career points, with a field goal and three extra points.

Results: Eastern Kentucky 49, Western Carolina 17
Game Notes: Booth rushed for a season-high 178 yards and three touchdowns and also had a 69-year touchdown reception to help lead his team to victory in the inaugural Opportunity Bowl - the final FCS vs. FCS game of the season.
For the season, the redshirt junior running back, led the nation (FCS) with 752 rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.
Junior Jonathan Thompson named Dispatch Metro Defensive Player of the Year
Junior linebacker Jonathan Thompson was named the Columbus Dispatch Metro Defensive Player of the Year today (12/31) and First Team All-Metro.
Senior offensive lineman Billy Cain and senior running back Quintell Quinn were also named to the First Team.

Quintell Quinn signs with Ohio University
Congratulations to senior Quintell Quinn on signing his National Letter of Intent to play collegiately for Ohio Football! Quinn finished Stallion career as the program's all-time leading rusher with 3,363 yards. As a three-year letter-winner, Quinn accounted for 48 touchdowns, 278 tackles, and was a three-time First Team All-Central District Player, in addition to becoming the school's fourth player to be named First Team All-Ohio twice (Mark White, Luke Fickell, Grant Bowman).

Earlier today, the Ohio Preps Sportswriters Association Division-III All-Ohio teams were announced and three Stallions earned First Team All-Ohio honors: senior running back Quintell Quinn, senior offensive lineman Billy Cain, and junior linebacker Jonathan Thompson.
Senior placekicker JJ Baughman was named Second Team All-Ohio and senior linebacker Jason Velazquez was named Honorable Mention All-Ohio.

Quinn becomes the first Stallion to be named to the first team in consecutive seasons since Grant Bowman (1997, 1998). He led the Stallions with 1,350 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns and set a new school-record for career rushing yards with 3,363 yards. On defense, he recorded 89 tackles and ten tackles for a loss with three sacks.
Helping pave the way for Quinn and a rushing attack that averaged 272.8 yards per game, was senior lineman Billy Cain. Billy started all 11 games at right guard, after starting every game (12) in 2019. He also made 33 stops this year on defense, with four tackles for loss.
Jonathan Thompson, the Central District Division-III Defensive Player of the Year, led the Stallions with 31.5 tackles for a loss and nine sacks. He also tied for a team-leading five interceptions. He was third on the team with 74 tackles and on offense, he rushed for 695 yards and had six rushing touchdowns.

In his first year playing football, JJ Baughman kicked nine field goals and made 38-of-41 extra points.
Jason Velazquez led the Stallions with 100 tackles and also recorded 10.5 tackles for a loss.

Gameday - This Date in SFD Football History - 11/21/97
DeSales beat Cincinnati Purcell Marian 20-0 in a State Semifinal and advanced to their fourth State Championship game and second straight. On their first possession of the game, DeSales put together an 11-play, 67-yard drive and David Cook’s 1-yard run gave the Stallions a 7-0 lead. As the game progressed, the playing conditions worsened, but DeSales’ defense (pictured above) would earn the shutout, their third of the season. Matt Bajorek had a seven-yard touchdown run and the Stallion defense intercepted four Purcell Marian passes. David Cook also added a score for DeSales.
DeSales 23, Kettering Alter 13
The Stallions advanced to their ninth State Championship game appearance after a 23-13 win over Kettering Alter. Quintell Quinn rushed for 135 yards and three touchdowns and is now the school's all-time leading career rusher! He broke Alonzo Booth’s career rushing mark of 3,352 yards on a game-clinching run in the waning moments of the fourth quarter.
DeSales will play Chardon next Saturday night at 7PM for the Division-III State Final.
This Date in SFD Football History - 11/13/2004
The Stallions rolled to a 42-7 victory over Pemberville Eastwood in a Regional Semifinal at Wapakoneta. The Stallions jumped out to a 42-0 lead, thanks to a balanced rushing attack. Justin Moore led the way with 102 yards on 16 carries. Chris Thomas had three rushing touchdowns and 68 yards. Quarterback Matt Mangini rushed for 66 yards and threw just two passes.
All-Central District Teams Announced
Earlier today, the 2020 All-Central District Football Team was announced. Junior lineman Jonathan Thompson (defensive) and Head Coach Ryan Wiggins picked up Player of the Year Honors in Division-III..
Also joining Thompson on First-Team All-District are linebacker Jason Velazquez, running back Quintell Quinn, offensive lineman Billy Cain, and placekicker JJ Baugman.
Through nine games, Thompson leads the team in tackles for a loss (25.5) and interceptions (5) .
Velazquez leads the Stallions with 77 stops and is third on the team with 9.5 tackles for a loss. Quinn is 125 yards away from breaking Alonzo Booth’s career rushing mark set in 2016 and has accounted for 1,215 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns. Baughman, in his first year playing football, is 8-for-11 kicking field goals and is 31-for-33 in PATs.
Offensive lineman Will Hast and defensive lineman Matthew Stewart earned Second Team honors, while Jordan Johnson, Owen Kirk and Nicky Pentello were recognized as Special Mention.
Jonathan Thompson named Central District Defensive Player of the Year
Junior lineman Jonathan Thompson was named the Division-III Central District Player of the Year. Through nine games, Thompson leads the team in tackles for a loss (25.5) and interceptions (5) and is third on the team with 57 stops. On offense, he’s rushed for 592 yards with six touchdowns.
It’s the second time in three years that a Stallion defender was named the District Player of the Year. Joey Velazquez picked up the honor in 2018.
DIII Regional Final, DeSales 38, Bishop Hartley 7
Stallions advance, after a 38-7 win against Bishop Hartley, to the Divison-III State Final Four and will play Kettering Alter next Friday nigh . Quintell Quinn led DeSales with four touchdowns as the Purple White out-gained the Hawks in total yards 413-162. It’s the 12th Regional crown for the Stallions and fourth under Coach Wiggins.
This Date in SFD Football History - 11/6/1987
November 6, 1987 - the Stallions beat the defending State Champion Bishop Hartley Hawks 27-6 and locked down the number 3 seed for the Division-II Region 7 playoffs. It would also mark the last time the two schools - Hartley and DeSales - played against each other for 9,847 days.
DIII Regional Semifinal: DeSales 31, Jonathan Alder 6, final.
The Stallions rushed for 355 yards and advanced to the Region 11 Championship where they will face Bishop Hartley. Quintell Quinn had 179 yards and three touchdowns, Jonathan Thompson tallied 126 yards with a score as the Purple and White improved to 7-1 on the season.
The Stallion Defense held the Pioneers to 100 yards rushing in the first meeting between the two teams since 1964.
Gameday - This Date in SFD Football History!
10/30/10 - Ten years ago today, the Stallions beat Cleveland Benedictine on the final day of the regular season 35-24 to qualify for their 17th consecutive playoff appearance. DeSales rushed for 282 yards against the Bengals, led by Nick Gentile's 69 yards and three touchdowns. Warren Ball also crossed the goal line twice as the Stallions improved to 5-5 overall. The night before, Gahanna Lincoln - a team DeSales beat in week 1 - upset Groveport Madison to set up a win-and-in scenario the following evening for the Stallions in Cleveland.
DIII Regional Semifinal: DeSales 56, Granville 35, Final
The Stallions erupted for a 36 point third quarter en route to a 56-35 Regional Quarterfinal win over Granville, in a game that was resumed a day after it started. Granville had a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter when the game was delayed and eventually postponed until the follow day.
On the first play on Saturday, Quintell Quinn raced 42 yards for a touchdown -part of a 181 yard and four touchdown performance for the future Ohio Bobcat.
The Stallions took a 20-15 lead into halftime and on the opening possession of the second half, Granville returned the kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. On the ensuing kick, Granville recovered it and on the next play from scrimmage, Matthew Stewart picked up a Thompson forced fumble and returned it 55 yards for a score. Jonathan Thompson would record his second interception of the game and took it in for another defensive touchdown on Granville’s next possession.
Nathan Barber caught a 30-yard pass from Whit Hobgood for his first career touchdown. Thompson also had a rushing touchdown for the Stallions, who advance to play Jonathan Alder in a Regional Semifinal.
With the win DeSales improved to 16-2 all-time in Regional Quarterfinals.
Bonus Gameday - This Date in SFD Football History.
On October 24, 1987 the Stallions won their 32nd straight game. THIRTY-SECOND. They beat Columbus St. Charles 18-0 and improved to 8-0 overall, 2-0 in Ohio Catholic League play. Jared Van Guilder had a pair of two-yard touchdown runs to lead the Stallions on offense. Jack Elgin also threw a touchdown pass for DeSales. (Pictured: Tom Walsh)
Gameday - This Date in SFD Football History!
Today we go back to October 23, 1982. DeSales beat Columbus St. Charles 22-0 as the The Stallion Defense held the Cardinals to 106 total yards, including 1-of-12 passing for 6 yards. Paul Dobner had two three-yard touchdown runs for DeSales, who jumped out to a 15-0 first quarter lead. Bill Schwartz added a touchdown pass and kicked two PATs. It was the fifth shutout over St. Charles, in the last six games for DeSales.
The Stallions would go on to win the 1982 CCL Championship, their sixth in school history.
The Freshmen Football team finishes CCL play undefeated
Congratulations to the 2020 Freshmen Football Central Catholic League Champions! The Stallions clinched the outright title last week and today (10/3) they finished CCL play unbeaten after a 28-2 win against Bishop Hartley.
The Stallions improved to 6-0 overall and has outscored its opponents 145-17.
