SFD senior Ryan Corkrean verbals to Ashland University

Three-year starting linebacker Ryan Corkrean verbally committed to Ashland University this evening.  Corkrean started 39 games on defense and 21 as a tight end.  As a senior, he was named Second Team All-Ohio after recording 83 tackles, 16.5 for a loss.  Corkrean also led the Stallions in tackles as sophomore and a junior.  

Booth will participate in St. Francis DeSales' National Signing Day on Wednesday, February 1, which will be held after school.

SFD senior Alonzo Booth commits to Eastern Kentucky University

Senior running back Alonzo Booth, a First Team All-Ohio selection, verbally committed to Eastern Kentucky University today.  Booth is the school's all-time leading career rusher (3,352 yards) and set the record for most rushing yards (2,437) and touchdowns (40) in a single season.  

Booth will participate in St. Francis DeSales' National Signing Day on Wednesday, February 1, which will be held after school.

Two Stallion seniors make their college choices

A pair of Stallion Football seniors made their college selections this weekend.  Lineman Drew McLuckie committed to the University of Findlay on Friday and placekicker Dominic DiMaccio committed to the University of Missouri.  Both will sign National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, February 1, as part of National Signing Day.  

McLuckie was a three-year starter for DeSales, making 34 starts on the offensive line and 23 starts at defensive end.  The 6-foot-4 210 pounder was named Second Team All-Ohio as an offensive lineman and helped pave the way for a Stallion rushing attack that amassed 3,996 yards.  

For the past two seasons, DiMaccio served as the team's primary punter and placekicker.  As a senior, Dominic was recognized as a Second Team All-Ohio selection after scoring 96 points.  DiMaccio also earned Second Team All-Ohio honors as a junior.

St. Francis DeSales will host a Signing Day ceremony after school on Wednesday, February 1.

St. Francis DeSales named Academic All-Ohio by the OHSFCA

For the second straight season the St. Francis DeSales Varsity Football team has been named Academic All-Ohio by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association (OHSFCA).  The achievements are based upon academic performance in the first quarter of 2016.  With 18 players earning a 4.0 GPA or greater, and 43 with a 3.0 or higher, the Stallions had a team GPA of 3.62.  

Earning individual Academic All-Ohio honors were seniors Ryan Corkrean, Drew McLuckie and Jared Noble.

Former DeSales running back JT Blubaugh '13 has been named a captain for the Ohio State University's Men's Lacrosse team for the upcoming 2017 season.  Blubaugh, who led the Stallions with 895 rushing yards in 2012, has appeared in 48 career games for the Buckeyes and has 32 goals.  

While at DeSales, Blubaugh received two letters in football, and also set the career scoring mark for the boys lacrosse program.  He was a two-time first team All-Ohio selection for the lacrosse team and helped lead the Stallions to the 2012 Division-II State Championship.

Running back Alonzo Booth was named First Team All-Ohio by the Associated Press today after a record-breaking season in 2016 for the Regional Champion Stallions.  The senior set school-records for most rushing yards in a season (2,437), most touchdowns in a season (40) and most rushing yards in a career (3,352).  

Booth's recognition marked the 59th time a Stallion Football player earned First Team All-Ohio honors.  He's the first DeSales running back since Warren Ball in 2011 to be named first team.

Four senior DeSales football players were named Second Team All-Ohio by the Associated Press on Tuesday.  Linebacker Ryan Corkrean (83 tackles, 16.5 for a loss, 2 interceptions), placekicker Dominic DiMaccio (96 points), offensive lineman Drew McLuckie (anchor on a line that helped amass 3,998 rushing yards) and defensive lineman Derrius Mullins (78 tackles, 25.5 for a loss).

Mullins and Corkrean were each three-year starters DeSales, starting 39 games.  They helped lead the Stallions to 33 wins, three straight CCL Silver Division Championships and a Regional Championship. 

McLuckie spent the better part of two years as a two-way starter for the Stallions.  On offense, he started 35 games as a right tackle, including the final 11 games in 2014 as a sophomore.  On defense, Drew started 22 games as an end.  

Mullins was named second team All-Ohio as a junior in 2015.  He finished his career with 208 tackles, 60.5 for a loss.  

DiMaccio also received second team all-state honors for the second straight season.  This year, he tied a school-record for longest field goal, making a 55-yard attempt against Canal Winchester.   

Corkrean is a two-time First Team All-Central District selection and led the Stallions in tackles as a sophomore and junior.  He finished his DeSales career with 251 tackles, 38 tackles for a loss.

Presale tickets for Saturday's Division-III State Semifinal Football game against Akron Archbishop Hoban will be on sale Tuesday, November 22 and Wednesday, November 23 in the St. Francis DeSales cafeteria during all three lunch periods.  Presale tickets are $8 and will be $10 at the gate.  Save $2 by purchasing the presale tickets, plus the SFDHS Athletic Department will receive $1.40 of each ticket sold. 

Saturday's game against Hoban marks the first meeting between the two schools.  

The last time DeSales played at Arlin Field was in a 2008 Division-II Regional Final against Louisville.  The Stallions won 38-21 and avenged a loss to the Leopards in the 2007 DII Regional Championship. Highlights of the game, can be seen below

The Stallions captured the program's 11th Regional Championship after a 49-6 win over Hamilton Township.  With the victory, DeSales improved to 13-0 and will play Akron Archbishop Hoban in a Division-III State Semifinal on Saturday, November 26.  

The Stallion defense held Hamilton Township -25 yards rushing in the first half and 2-of-14 on 3rd downs for the game.  Ryan Corkrean returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown. 

Alonzo Booth rushed for 188 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, his 13th multi-score game.  Junior quarterback Cole Silvestri rushed for a touchdown (22) and threw for 104 yards with two passing touchdowns.   Joe Arnold had one of those scoring receptions, from 51-yards out and also returned an offensive fumble 55 yards for a touchdown as the Stallions won their 54th playoff game.  

For the game, the Stallions tallied 410 yards of offense (on 35 plays, 11.7 yards per play) the second highest of the season.  DeSales has now scored 574 points on the season, a school record.  

For Head Coach Ryan Wiggins, it's his 16th playoff win and third Regional Championship.

The OHSAA has announced State Semifinal Pairings

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced today how the football Regional Champions will be paired next week for the State Semifinals.  In Division-III, the winners of Region 9 and Region 11 will play in one semifinal, with the winners of Region 10 and Region 12 in the other semifinal. 

Division III State Semifinals will be played on Saturday, Nov. 26, 7:00 p.m.
Home teams and sites to be announced Sunday, Nov. 20.

Region 9 (Akron Hoban-New Philadelphia) vs. Region 11 (DeSales-Hamilton Township).  Region 10 (Toledo Central Catholic-Lexington) vs. Region 12 (St. Marys Memorial-Trotwood Madison).  

DeSales 38, Beechcroft 12, final

Alonzo Booth rushed for 228 yards with four touchdowns as the Stallions beat Beechcroft 38-12 in a Division-III Regional Semifinal at Westerville North High School.  

After a slow start, the Stallions got on track in the second quarter when Cole Silvestri connected with Ryan Corkrean for 46 yards.  The play set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Booth.  Alonzo would make it 14-0 on a 45-yard run in the second quarter.  Dominic DiMaccio extended the lead to 17-0 near the end of the half on a 46-yard free kick. 

In the second half, Booth rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns.  Joey Velazquez scored his first career rushing touchdown on a 2-yard run in the 4th quarter.  

With the win, the Stallions improved to 12-0 and will play Hamilton Township in the Regional Championship.  It will be the first meeting with the Ranger since the 1978 season.  DeSales leads the series 2-0. 

 

All-Central District Teams Announced

The 2016 All-Central District Football teams were released Thursday evening.  

DeSales senior running back Alonzo Booth was being named the Division-III Central District Offensive Player of the Year.  Also being named first Team All-District were Drew McLuckie (OL), Dominic DiMaccio (PK), Derrius Mullins (DL) and Ryan Corkrean (LB).  Ty Van Fossen (LB) and Jared Noble (DB) were named Second Team All-District.  Brian Asamoah (RB/LB) was named Special Mention All-District and Joe Arnold was named Honorable Mention All-District.

The Stallions scored 35 points in the second quarter en route to a 55-13 victory over Thornville Sheridan in a Division-III Regional Quarterfinal playoff game in Alumni Stadium.  Alonzo Booth rushed for 164 yards and scored four touchdowns as the senior set the career-rushing mark, passing Dino Razzano (2,760), and the single season record for most touchdowns, passing Warren Ball (29).  

Booth was one of five Stallions to score against the Generals, who were making their 18th playoff appearance.  Cole Silvestri rushed for a touchdown and connected with Ryan Corkrean for 53 yards for a passing touchdown.  Brian Asamoah and Ryan Peaks each had 5-yard runs for scores as the Stallions piled up 292 rushing yards, 238 of them in the first half. 

Ryan Corkean and Jared Noble had interceptions for a Stallion defense that held Sheridan to 127 yards.  

DeSales won their 52nd playoff game, which moved them into 8th place all-time in OHSAA history and improved to 12-1 in playoff games in Alumni Stadium.  

Next Saturday, the Stallions will play Beechcroft at 7PM, location TBA.  The two teams have met 22 times with DeSales leading the series 17-5.

For the 9th time in school history the Stallions (10-0) finished the regular season undefeated after a 56-14 win at Mt. Vernon.  On his first carry of the night, Alonzo Booth raced 50 yards for the touchdown, breaking Matt Stewart's single season rushing record.  Booth finished with 3 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns.  The senior running back also tied Warren Ball's single season scoring mark of 29 touchdowns. 

The 2016 team set a program record for most points scored in a regular season (432 points) and now only trails the 1998 team (450) for most points scored overall, including playoffs. 

Cole Silvestri ran for a touchdown and passed for two more as the Stallions totaled 313 first half yards.  Jared Noble (38) and Joe Arnold (30) each had receiving touchdowns.  

Defensively, the Purple and White intercepted three passes, including one by Joey Velazquez that was returned 71 yards for a touchdown.  It was the second interception returned for a score by the sophomore defensive back in as many weeks.   The Stallions also received a defensive touchdown when AJ Sallee forced a fumble that went right into arms of Colton Hilleary who took it 65 yards for his first score on the varsity level.  

Overall, it is the 16th time that DeSales has won at least 10 games.  DeSales will host a Regional Quarterfinal game on Saturday, November 5 at 7PM.

The 10th and final edition of the "Where Are They Now?" series in 2016 is Matt Bajorek '98.  

Matt accounted for over 1,500 yards as a senior and was the starting quarterback on the 1997 Division-III State Championship team that beat Youngstown Chaney 17-14.  In that game, the Stallion signal caller ran for a 17-yard touchdown and threw for over 100 yards.  He also completed a big 39-yard pass to Tony Moore on a 3rd and 15 on the game-winning drive in the 4th quarter.

James Prater - Football Alum of the Week

James Prater, a sophomore defensive lineman had a career day in his Ashland's 63-6 win over Lake Erie last Saturday (10/15).  The 6-0, 269 pounder recorded a career-high 6 tackles, had a sack and recovered his first fumble as an Eagle.   

Last year, the former Stallion appeared in four games and made four tackles with a sack for Ashland, who finished the regular season undefeated before losing to Grand Valley State in the NCAA tournament.   

While at DeSales, James played both ways for the Stallions, but primarily served as a Linebacker as a senior in 2014.  As part of the Regional Runner-up team his final year as a Stallion, Prater was second on the time with 90 tackles.  From his linebacker position, he also finished second with 12 tackles for a loss for the CCL Silver Division Champions.

The Stallions scored 21 points in the first quarter, as part of a 38 point first half, en route to a 38-7 win over St. Charles to clinch the 2016 Central Catholic League Silver Division Championship.  Alonzo Booth had 168 total yards (102 rushing, 66 receiving), scored three touchdowns and moved into second place all-time with 1,623 yards for most rushing yards in a single season.  

Cole Silvestri connected with Booth (66) and Joe Arnold (50) for passing touchdowns as the Purple and White totaled 271 first half yards.  

The Stallion defense held the Cardinals to 31 yards of offense in the first half and Joey Velazquez had an interception return for a touchdown. 

It was the third straight CCL Silver Division Championship for Head Coach Ryan Wiggins and 7th overall (in 10 seasons) for the 1997 SFD alumnus. 

With the win the Stallions also clinched a home first round OHSAA Regional Quarterfinal game, which will play be played on Saturday, November 5.  DeSales is 9th all-time in Ohio history with 25 playoff appearances.
