Cole Silvestri

Senior quarterback Cole Silvestri accounted for five touchdowns, including three in a 28-0 second quarter for the Stallions as they won their fifth straight over Watterson..  Silvestri threw for 161 yards with three scores and rushed for 51 yards and two touchdowns in his final game.  The Stallion defense held the Eagles to -9 yards rushing for the game and were led by Ty Van Fossen's nine tackles and 37-yard fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.  Van Fossen also caught a 51-yard touchdown pass as did Carter Hilleary (34 yards).  Brian Asamoah led the Stallions with 99 yards rushing.  It's the second time that Head Coach Ryan Wiggins won five in a row against Watterson.

Where Are They Now? - Andy Habing '95

The tenth and final edition of "Where Are They Now" for the 2023 season, presented by Ben Aucoin, State Farm Agent, is Andy Habing ‘95.

As senior, Habing was a First Team All-Ohio defensive lineman on a Stallion team that finished the regular season undefeated for the fifth time in school history. Habing was also named the Central District and Dispatch-Agonis Defensive Player of the Year.

Where Are They Now? - Chris Rock '11

The ninth edition of "Where Are They Now" for the 2023 season, presented by Ben Aucoin, State Farm Agent, is Chris Rock ‘11.

Rock was a three-year starter for the Stallions and was a part of two Regional Championship teams in 2008 and 2009. As a junior, he was second team All-Ohio after recording 64 tackles and 15 sacks on the Division-III State Runner-up Team. Chris started his career after DeSales at the University of Michigan, but transferred to Ohio State and was a member of the 2014 National Championship Team.

This Date in SFD Football History - 10/20/89

Todd Vrancken ran for one touchdown and threw for the winning score as DeSales defeated Kettering Alter 14-7 in an Ohio Catholic League victory. The Knights took the opening kick 80 yards for a score, but Vrancken tied the game at 7 after a four-yard run. Vrancken finished with 63 yards rushing and had the go-ahead touchdown pass to Chris Rezentes for 65 yards in the fourth quarter. The Stallions stopped the Knights and their attempt to tie the game with a goal line stand late in the fourth quarter.

Where Are They Now? - John Susi '76

The eighth edition of "Where Are They Now" for the 2023 season, presented by Ben Aucoin, State Farm Agent, is John Susi ‘76.

John was a co-captain linebacker for the Stallions in 1975 and had the unique opportunity to play under coaches, Tom Weilbacher, Guido Ricevuto, and Forest “Treeze” Sharrock.

This Date in SFD Football History - 10/13/67

Today we go back to October 13, 1967 - 56 years ago today - Mike Roach’s 40-yard touchdown pass to Jim Stafford in the fourth quarter was the difference as the Stallions rallied to beat Whetstone 14-8 for their first win in 1967.  The Braves scored first and led 8-0, but Rick Mangini’s two-yard run and a two-point conversion by Skip DeAscentis tied the game at 8-8 in the third quarter.

Where Are They Now? - Jason Wiggins '96

The seventh edition of "Where Are They Now" for the 2023 season, presented by Ben Aucoin, State Farm Agent, is Jason Wiggins ‘96.

Jason was a First Team All-Central District player for a DeSales Defense that set the record for fewest points allowed in a regular season (33).  He continued his playing career at the University of Akron, where was named First Team Academic All Mid-American Conference in 1999 and 2000. 

He returned to DeSales as a defensive line coach, where spent 16 seasons.  During that span, he coached 13 players who earned either first team or second team All-Ohio honors as a lineman.  In 2015, he was recognized as the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association (OHSFCA) Division-III Assistant Coach of the Year.

Where Are They Now? - Chuck Black '99

The sixth edition of "Where Are They Now" for the 2023 season, presented by Ben Aucoin, State Farm Agent, is Chuck Black ‘99.

Chuck was a starter on the 1997 and 1998 State Championship Teams. As a senior, he was recognized as Second Team All-Ohio and was part of an offense that set a program-record for most points scored in a single season (450). After DeSales, Chuck played for Otterbein College, where he was a four-year letter-winner.

This Date in SFD Football History - 9/29/17

The Stallion Defense was dominant in a 31-0 win over St. Charles.  DeSales out-gained the Cardinals 397-70 as the Purple and White posted their second shutout of the season and the 18th all-time against St. Charles.  

Brian Asamoah (113 rushing) and Joey Velazquez (125 all-purpose) combined for 238 yards of offense and three touchdowns in the 42nd win against the Cardinals (in 46 games).  Quarterback Cole Silvestri threw for a touchdown and rushed for another score as the Stallions improved to 4-2 overall, 1-0 in Central Catholic League play. 

DeSales held winless St. Charles  to three 1st downs and 0 yards passing for the second straight year. 

This Date in SFD Football History - 9/22/73

This Date in SFD Football History - 9/22/73 - Jim Winnans had two rushing touchdowns (4, 3) to help the Stallions improve to 3-0 in 1973 after an 18-7 win over Wooster. 

Pat Richards caught a 26-yard pass from Mike Kristoff to give the Stallions a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, which was set up by a John Slupski interception.

Where Are They Now? - Anthony Sciarroni '19

The fifth edition of "Where Are They Now" for the 2023 season, presented by Ben Aucoin, State Farm Agent, is Anthony Sciarroni ‘19

Anthony was a two-sport standout while at DeSales. He was a two-time Second Team All-Ohio Defensive Back and was a four-year letter-winner in Basketball, along with being a two-year captain.

After DeSales, Sciarroni concluded his football career at Valparaiso, where he appeared in 26 games and has since walked onto the Valpo Basketball Team.

Where Are They Now? - Bill Kearns '65

The fourth edition of "Where Are They Now" for the 2023 season, presented by Ben Aucoin, State Farm Agent, is Bill Kearns ‘65.

Bill was a member of two Central Catholic League Championship Teams for DeSales in 1964, including Football his senior year, when the Stallions captured the program’s first-ever CCL title after tying Watterson 8-8. In Track, Bill held both the school and CCL record for shot put and discus and was a part of the school’s first league title in the spring of ‘64.

After graduating from DeSales, Bill walked onto the Ohio State Football Team, but Track ended up being his sport. He earned two letters in Track in 1968 and 1969.

These days, Bill is a semi-retired engineer, who spends most of his time, when he’s not working, with his wife Marilyn of 52 years.

Here, Bill shares some great stories from the early days of DeSales, including one where he volunteered to help set up the gymnasium’s bleachers for Coach Sharrock.

This Date in SFD Football History - 9/9/06

Today we go back to September 9, 2006. DeSales jumped out to a 19-0 first quarter lead en route to a 53-19 dismantling of Westerville North. Jimmy Vahalik (pictured) went 7-for-7 passing for 99 yards and had two rushing touchdowns (9, 6) as the Stallions improved to 3-0 to start 2006. Stallion running back A.J. Kaltenbach added a 51-yard scoring run in the first meeting with the Warriors since 1979.

Where Are They Now? - Chi Chi Ariguzo '10

The third edition of "Where Are They Now" for the 2023 season, presented by Ben Aucoin, State Farm Agent, is Chi Chi Ariguzo ‘10.

A two-year starter on back-to-back Regional Championship DeSales teams, Chi Chi went onto play at Northwestern, where he appeared in 48 games.  He was a three-time Honorable Mention All-Big Ten linebacker and finished his career in a tie for 10th all-time at Northwestern with 333 career tackles.  As a senior, he led the Wildcats with 104 tackles in 2014, 10th most in the Big Ten, and was Academic All-Big Ten.  

Ariguzo signed with the San Diego Chargers in 2015 and the Detroit Lions the following year, but was unable to make the 53-man roster.

This Date in SFD Football History - 9/1/00

Mike Love hauls in a Borghese second half pass

In a wild shootout, DeSales beat Westerville South 50-37 behind quarterback Tony Borghese, who threw for three touchdowns and 171 yards, and rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

The Stallions trailed 24-21 at the half, but scored on their first three series of the second half to build a 42-31 lead. Fullback Jeff Acree, rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns in the second half.

Where Are They Now? - Kevin Hazel '01

The second edition of "Where Are They Now" for the 2023 season, presented by Ben Aucoin, State Farm Agent, is Kevin Hazel ‘01.

Kevin is the single season record holder for most receiving yards with 793 yards in 2000, which at the time, he broke his own record from the year before when he had 634 yards in 1999 - still good for third best in program history.

These days, Kevin resides in “the best city in America - San Diego” with his wife and three kids.

This Date in SFD Football History - August 25, 2018

Anthony Sciarroni

Against Dayton Dunbar at Wayne High School, DeSales scored on the first play from scrimmage when Reno Godfrey found Anthony Sciarroni for a 66-yard strike and the Stallions never looked back (audio below).  The Purple and White scored 21 first quarter points en route to a 35-0 win for the Stallions second straight season opening shutout.  

Joey Velaquez, Jaylen Ball and Godfrey each had first half rushing touchdowns.  Junior defensive back Owen Faulkner returned an interception 25 yards for his first career touchdown.  The interception was part of four turnovers forced by the Stallions.

DeSales 21, Tri-Valley 17, Final

DeSales rallied from behind twice in the second half to beat Tri-Valley 21-17 in the 2023 season opener. Freshman quarterback RJ Day connected with Jack Elgin from 31 yards out, on 3rd and 19, with 25 seconds remaining for the game-winning touchdown.

DeSales trailed 10-0 in the fourth quarter when Max Shulaw crossed the goal line from two yards out and on the ensuing kickoff, Lincoln Shulaw recovered a Tri-Valley fumble. Junior quarterback PJ Noles gave the Stallions their first lead at 14-10 with a four-yard rushing touchdown with 5:24 remaining.

The Scotties would regain the lead with 1:59 remaining at 17-14 before the game-winning drive for DeSales.

Senior punter Brendan Ballard had four key punts, averaging 47.8 per, and made a one-handed catch on a high snap in the second half to prevent a potential Tri-Valley score. Senior running back Avery Garlock led the Stallions with 45 yards rushing on 7 carries.
