11/7/64 Bishop Watterson 8 - 8 (@ Brookhaven) Games notes:
The Stallions captured a share of their first-ever CCL championship with a tie against Watterson. DeSales linebacker Dick Penrod intercepted a Fritz Kaiser pass at the Stallions’ 4 yard line with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game to secure the tie. DeSales held an 8-0 lead at halftime thanks to Kenny Evans’ 4-yard touchdown run, coupled with a successful 2-point conversion in which Kenny Schneider connected with Butch Lewis. The score was set-up by a Mike DeAscentis fumble recovery, only one play after the Stallions turned the ball over on a loss of downs at the Watterson 5 yard line with 2:02 remaining in the 2nd quarter. A DeSales turnover led to Watterson’s game-tying touchdown, although the Eagles had to drive farther than the Stallions did for the score. Dave Crites picked off a Schneider pass at the Watterson 37 yard line in the 3rd quarter. Kaiser then hit two passes, totaling 34 yards as the Eagles moved the ball deep into DeSales territory. Kevin Ryan made it 8-6 after a 4-yard touchdown run with 2:19 remaining in the 3rd quarter. On the 2-point conversion, Don Holland tied the game at 8-8. Watterson, which had only lost 5 games in the previous 5 season, came into the game averaging over 40 points per game.
