The Stallions won their 30th straight game overall by defeating their rivals at Northland High School.  DeSales, who moved to 6-0, needed the win in their effort to qualify for the postseason.  Despite being ranked 2nd in the Division-II AP Ohio Poll, the Purple and White were 6th in the most recent Region 7 Computer Poll.  In fact, in 1986 the Stallions went 10-0 in the regular season and did not qualify for the state playoffs even though they played the exact same schedule as they did in 1985 - the year the won the state championship.  Against Watterson, DeSales never trailed as Jack Elgin scored a 1-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter after a 10-play, 75-yard drive.  On the next possession, Watterson hit a 33-yard field goal to make it 6-3 DeSales, which was the score at halftime.  After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Joe Cua recovered a fumble at the DeSales 44 yard line in the 4th quarter.  The Stallions then went on an 11-play drive that feature seven Jared Van Guilder runs, including his 4-yard touchdown and DeSales led 12-3 with 8:33 remaining.  Van Guilder finished the game with 134 yards rushing to led the Purple and White.

After faulty lighting forced the game to be played on a Sunday afternoon, sophomore placekicker Dan Sprout kicked a 20-yard field goal with 10 seconds left in regulation to give the Stallions their 23rd straight win, the longest winning streak in the state.  Scoreless at halftime, Watterson took a 7-0 lead on their first possession of the 2nd half.  It was the first time all season that the Stallions trailed in a game.  DeSales quarterback Jack Elgin led his team on a 6 play, 51 yard drive and scored on an 8 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7 after a Sprout extra point.  With 1:15 remaining in the game, the Stallions took over at their own 48.  Elgin connected with Mike Green for 19 yards that moved the ball down to Watterson’s 8 yard line, setting up Sprout’s game winner.
